Chess Sets

These chess sets are each unique. They feature a variety of colors, textures and contemporary designs, inspired by the memory of Carl Judson's great-grandmother, Mrs. Ella Spencer (1836-1922). In the late 1800s, she was an adept chess master, also the editor of a syndicated chess column published in several leading newspapers and the Ladies Home Journal. The pieces are individually handmade and beautifully finished with felt bottoms to protect the board. Carl thinks of chess figures as fertile ground for sculpture with a familiar cultural context.

A page from Ella's scrap book. These are individual clippings she saved from the chess paper. They include stories, poems, chess moves, strategies, and news about chess from around the world.
